The Statler Brothers – Flowers On The Wall

The Statler Brothers – Flowers On The Wall

About The Song

Since the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum honored the Statler Brothers, we also share this moment by honoring them too. The best way to pay tribute to them is to feature one of their greatest songs of all time “Flowers on the Wall.”

The band was only beginning to release singles from their album. In addition, they were also beginning in their career. They have already released two singles before they scored their first song on the chart. In 1965, everything changed.

When they released “Flowers on the Wall” the band finally scored a song on the chart. It placed at number two on the Billboard country chart. “Flowers on the Wall” was penned by Lew DeWitt, a member of the band.

Aside from securing a spot on the top ten of the country chart, the Statler Brothers also won their first Grammy Award because of this song. In 1966, they brought home the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Performance.

After which, “Flowers on the Wall” became their signature song. Anyone who hears it will immediately know that it’s a song by the Statler Brothers.

“Flowers on the Wall” is a story of a man trying to get through his break up. He assures his ex-lover that he is doing well. He doesn’t need any pity from her or her friends because as he said, he’s doing fine. However, as you can see, he isn’t happy at all.

Countin’ flowers on the wall
That don’t bother me at all
Playin’ solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty-one
Smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo
Now don’t tell me I’ve nothin’ to do

The members of the Statler Brothers were honored in their birthplace, Staunton, Virginia on March 22. The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum named the exhibit “Sons of Staunton: The Statler Brothers.” When you visit the museum, you’ll expect to see costumes, instruments, props, and more that were used by the Statler Brothers all throughout their career. The families of the group members also helped in making this exhibit possible, according to Andrew Phillips, the museum’s curator.

Lyrics

I keep hearin’ you’re concerned about my happiness
But all that thought you’re givin’ me is conscience I guess
If I were walkin’ in your shoes, I wouldn’t worry none
While you and your friends are worried about me, I’m havin’ lots of fun
Countin’ flowers on the wall
That don’t bother me at all
Playin’ solitaire ’til dawn with a deck of 51
Smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo
Now don’t tell me, I’ve nothin’ to do
Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town
As long as I can dream it’s hard to slow this swinger down
So please don’t give a thought to me, I’m really doin’ fine
You can always find me here, I’m havin’ quite a time
Countin’ flowers on the wall
That don’t bother me at all
Playin’ solitaire ’til dawn with a deck of 51
Smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo
Now don’t tell me, I’ve nothin’ to do
It’s good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright
Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete
So I must go back to my room and make my day complete
Countin’ flowers on the wall
That don’t bother me at all
Playin’ solitaire ’til dawn with a deck of 51
Smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo
Now don’t tell me, I’ve nothin’ to do
Don’t tell me, I’ve nothin’ to do
